Project 1 :
Material Experience in Architecture: Structural & Architectural Building Material Applications (30% GROUP)

Task :

In a group of seven students, the task is to conduct a comprehensive case study on a captivating building in Kuala Lumpur or Selangor. The objective is to identify and analyze five architectural and two structural building materials used in the building. The group must highlight one material that significantly impacts end users through its application and provide a detailed illustration of its installation process. The project outcome will be presented on a single A1 board, organized to include the building's historical background, clear images and information on the materials, an analysis of the selected material's experiential impact, relevant building images, a conclusion on the material application, and references.

Our group has chosen the Malaysia National Theatre, Istana Budaya, located in Titiwangsa for our project. To obtain additional photos not available online, we have decided to conduct a site visit, which will also allow us to gather more information from the people in charge of the building.

THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS

Reflecting on this assignment, I realize how significantly it contributed to my development in lifelong learning and thinking and problem-solving skills, as outlined by Taylor's Graduate Capabilities (TGC). \

Through the comprehensive case study on the Malaysia National Theatre, Istana Budaya, I embraced the essence of lifelong learning. Conducting a site visit to gather additional information and photographs that were unavailable online required initiative and resourcefulness. This experience reinforced the importance of continuous learning beyond the classroom and emphasized the need for proactive engagement with real-world environments to enhance understanding.

The process of identifying and analyzing five architectural and two structural building materials demanded rigorous thinking and problem-solving skills. It was essential to evaluate various materials, understand their properties, and determine their relevance and impact on the building's overall design and user experience. Additionally, highlighting one material that exemplifies experiential impact and illustrating its installation process required critical analysis and creative thinking.

Collaborating with my group members to organize the information on a single A1 board tested our ability to synthesize complex data into a cohesive and visually appealing presentation. This task honed our skills in critical evaluation, effective communication, and teamwork.

Overall, this assignment has been an invaluable opportunity to apply and enhance my lifelong learning and thinking and problem-solving skills, preparing me for future challenges in the field of architecture.
