Project 3
THE HIDEOUT RETREAT (60% INDIVIDUAL)
Task :
For the final task, we must design a retreat at the National Botanical Garden, Shah Alam, with a site area of 300-400 sqm that includes the observatory post from Project 2. The retreat should feature resting areas (bedrooms, lounge, pantry), working areas (mini office, discussion room), recreational areas (games room, balcony), and supporting spaces (kitchen, laundry room, toilets), all within a maximum built-up space of 150 sqm. It should comfortably accommodate four people, including ourselves, for a 2-3 day stay. The design must fit the tropical site context and use architectural principles to create a unique and memorable experience.
Design Process
I initiated my research on Pinterest to gather inspiration and reinterpret my initial project. Subsequently, I began creating sketches and test models, presenting them to my tutor for feedback to refine and enhance my design.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
This project provided a valuable opportunity to apply architectural principles in a practical setting while enhancing our lifelong learning and interpersonal skills. Designing a retreat that harmonizes with the tropical site context and accommodates diverse needs challenged us to think critically and creatively.
Through this process, we deepened our understanding of sustainable design and the importance of integrating built environments with their natural surroundings. This aligns with Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC), particularly in fostering lifelong learning. By researching and applying new materials and techniques, we embraced continuous improvement and adaptability, essential traits for any successful career.
Additionally, managing this project independently required careful time arrangement and organization. Balancing various aspects of the design within the given timeframe sharpened our time management skills, demonstrating the ability to efficiently allocate resources and prioritize tasks. This experience has prepared us for future professional environments where effective time management is crucial.
Overall, this project was a comprehensive learning experience that reinforced our commitment to lifelong education and honed our ability to manage time effectively.
