Final Project
SPATIAL EXPLORATION & MANIPULATION (40% INDIVIDUAL)
SCULPTING ATMOSPHERES: EXPLORING MOOD THROUGH LIGHT AND SHADOWS
TASK :
Design three poetic spaces for a client/user by embodying and reflecting their characteristics, traits, behavioral actions, and habits based on student interpretations and findings, incorporating knowledge from Project 1 and Project 2, including design elements, principles, ergonomics, scale, proportion, form, and space manipulation, while expressing mood through the use of lights and shadows.
Idea Sketches
To start my project, I kick off the creative process by sketching multiple ideas and eventually choose the one that catches my attention the most. The project aims to explore spatial and mood spaces through the use of light and shadow, which is an exciting new venture for me. I brainstorm with others to come up with three distinct moods with interesting narratives for this assignment.
Narrative
In order to create a storyline for my three poetic spaces, I began by exploring narratives to generate additional design ideas for my model. Taking on the perspective of a client, I proceeded to develop a bubble diagram centered around my own preferences and characteristics.
Sketchwalk
We went on a sketch walk at Petaling Street, which was designed to provide us with ideas and case studies about light and shadow. It was my first time attending a sketch walk. It also an unforgettable experience for me : )
Mock-up Models
I created three mock-ups for each mood I chose and utilized them to explore light and shadow. This process helped me gain a better understanding of how to proceed with my assignment and improve upon it to create a superior final model. Hence, I combine three mock-up models to see what the overall model looks like.
Final Model
I've started working on my final model and I'm committed to making sure it's done to the best of my ability. To achieve the desired level of performance, I began by cutting out all the necessary pieces and organizing them, which will make it easier to combine them later on. I'm dedicated to completing the final model within the given timeframe, so I can wrap up the project before the deadline.
I created individual mood spaces for curiosity, fear, and relief, and then combined them. Once combined, I considered the transitions between each mood space.
Overall
After three days of non-stop work, I finally finished my final model. It represents a range of emotions that I experience in my daily life, starting with curiosity, leading to fear, followed by relief, and then returning to curiosity again. These emotions are connected in a continuous loop. Curiosity always inspires me to explore and understand new things, but sometimes I encounter challenges that make me feel scared and lost. However, I always find a glimmer of hope and feel relieved when I eventually conquer my fears and emerge from those dark moments.
External Review
I began working on my A2 presentation board once I finished creating the final model. On two pages of the board, I included a plan view, a section view, and an axonometric drawing. Additionally, I included some details to help the panel and tutor understand the information I wanted to convey.
After three sleepless nights, I have finally completed my presentation board and submitted it on the Google Drive provided by our lecturer. However, my work is not yet done as I still need to prepare for my external review.
I had to undergo an external review in the lecture theatre hall on campus. On the day of the review, I was extremely nervous, but I managed to calm myself down to ensure that I gave a flawless presentation. Fortunately, I was greeted by a friendly panel who provided me with some valuable feedback. I am extremely grateful for their guidance as it has helped me to improve and strengthen my skills.
REFLECTION
This assignment helped me learn a lot of things about architecture, which is the path I chose for my degree. Although it was tiring, completing all the work left me feeling impressed and satisfied with my efforts. Despite the lack of sleep, I truly enjoyed this journey towards the final assignment.
LifeLong Learning
I was able to put the skills acquired from my previous assignments to good use in my final project. Furthermore, I gained a deeper understanding of how light and shadow could be utilized to portray a mood in a model. Using a variety of components has given me confidence that the skills I gained will come in handy in my future projects.
Through this assignment, I have significantly improved my time management skills. It is crucial for me to organize my weekly workload efficiently to ensure that I can complete projects within the allocated time. Additionally, this assignment has taught me a great deal about designing my own projects. Overall, it has been a valuable experience, particularly as it marks the end of my final semester in the foundation year.
