Project 1A
Pre-Design Studies & Analysis
Task :
Project 1A focused on developing a comprehensive understanding of the proposed site in George Town, Penang, before moving into the architectural design stage. Under the theme “Architecture with an Impact,” the project explored how architecture can respond to the social, cultural, environmental, and urban conditions of the city.
The study investigated the relationship between people, place, and time through site observations, urban analysis, impact studies, and precedent research. Particular attention was given to the site’s relationship with KOMTAR and Sia Boey, its heritage context, movement patterns, public activities, environmental conditions, and existing urban character.
The findings were then synthesized into an initial architectural position, project intent, and programme for the proposed Urban Living Room: The Socio-Cultural Exchange Hub. This phase established the foundation for the individual design development in Project 1B.
